Ingel Vaikla’s artistic work is driven by a close dialogue between architecture and moving image practice. Notes On Thinking Through Spaces is an installation containing Vaikla’s recent audiovisual work presented in a dialogue with notes on translation, a disciplines which continues to influence her practice. What kind of parallels can be drawn between translating languages and using method of translation in moving image practice? What are the techniques and strategies of translating an experience of architecture into time-based medium? This loose dialogue between seemingly unrelated disciplines acts as a starting point for Vaikla’s new work in progress.

Ingel Vaikla (1992, Tallinn) is a visual artist and a filmmaker based in Brussels working primarily with video, 16 mm film and found footage. She is a former resident of HISK (2018 - 2019), Wiels Contemporary Art Centre (2021) and current Phd-researcher at PXL-MAD/UHasselt. Vaikla’s artistic practice focuses on representation of modernist architecture and the relationship between the space and its communities. She is on a constant search for visual language that would not simply observe architecture as an aesthetic sculptural form but would translate the existential, conceptual and ideological qualities spaces manifest.

Her works The House Guard, Roosenberg, Double Exposure, Papagalo, What's the Time?, EUR42  have been screened internationally at film festivals and art institutions such as IDFA in Amsterdam, Kunsthalle Wien, EKKM in Tallinn,  Beursschouwburg in Brussels, Manifesta 13 in Marseille, Videonale in Bonn, Tramway in Glasgow European Media Art Festival in Osnabrück, Busan International Video Art Festival etc.
